Visualising Engineering Communication – Using Systems Design to Understand Communication in an Engineering Project workshop in Pittsburgh, USA

On the 15th July 2023, Stephen Harper from Technological University Dublin presented and delivered a workshop entitled ‘Visualising Engineering Communication – Using Systems Design to Understand Communication in an Engineering Project’ at the IEEE ProComm Conference in Pittsburgh, USA. IEEE ProComm, also known as the IEEE Professional Communication Society, is a society within the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It focuses on the study and advancement of communication methods and practices in professional and technical environments. The society’s scope includes all aspects of communication, ranging from technical writing and presentations to intercultural and organizational communication. IEEE ProComm organizes conferences, publishes research, and provides resources to improve communication skills among engineers, scientists, and other technical professionals.

Stephen Harper’s workshop demonstrated a collaborative thinking methodology developed by the ECO-GT research team. This approach involved focus groups with industry stakeholders, recent graduates, employers, and academic staff to identify the communication skills necessary for engineers in typical projects.
